Is marketing just like dating?!

Last Friday night I was part of a panel that spoke at a singles discussion forum called ‘Love and Learn’ with Visions in Style.

And I thought I was a little unqualified to be on the panel until I realised that life is just about creating quality relationships, establishing connection and getting your message across by whatever means you feel comfortable. And that is what I do every day with my clients. Helping them develop relationships with their audiences and creating meaningful, heartfelt connections that feel deeply personal!❤

The number one thing that most people want in any relationship is to be heard, understood, and respected.
And your client or potential customer is no different. Marketing should be a two way street with any discussion you have with them. 

That is why traditional advertising feels really icky these days. You are only talking AT your customer – and it usually feels like shouting because it’s so one directional. (Think of a spruiker standing in a shopping centre with a microphone and that’s what advertising feels like these days!).

Why do you think social media is so popular?! Because on all of the platforms, people have a voice, and they can create communities around them and feel heard and significant. It’s a forum where people feel like they matter. Therefore businesses that offer their clients an opportunity to comment back, engage in conversation, share stories, ask questions and feel like they are part of something… are winning! 

Want more customers? Create real relationships with them and allow them to fall in love with your brands. It’s absolutely no different to creating a meaningful relationship with a friend or a future partner. The customer that feels heard will create a bond with you like no other! If they feel like you are speaking directly to them in a language they understand, then a true connection is created. Just like starting a new personal relationship!

LOVE LANGUAGES
In a quality relationship, you consider people’s 5 love languages.
1. Touch
2. Acts of Service
3. Kind words
4. Gift giving
5. Spending quality time together

Most people are aware of how they like to give love and receive love. So what if you applied these same principles to your customers – where appropriate of course! Acts of service would include providing lots of helpful information and advice for clients that really makes a difference to their lives. Turning up in their inbox, on their social feeds, doing nothing but serving and giving. 

Whereas I have a business mentor whose favourite thing to do is send random gifts to her clients because that is her thing. And for people with that love language, there is nothing better! And if spending lots of quality time together is your particular love language, then showing up regularly to your audience with personalised VIP zoom calls, webinars, going live to your audience regularly, and offering 1:1 sessions… is really going to make them very happy and engaged with your business and service.

Every interaction we have with our potential and existing clients is related to one of the 5 love languages.
Treat people with kindness, respect and understand intimately how your audience likes to be engaged with… and you are on a winning combination!
It’s the person who really knows their target audience so well that they even understand their love languages, that ultimately will win.

Not your average conversation with your typical marketing person is it!

Awesome start to the week in The Rocks this mornin Awesome start to the week in The Rocks this morning with my favourite personal development coach/mentor, client and friend, Karyn Battersby. Aside from a great catch up, we shot a fresh episode for my podcast which I’ll load up soon all about SELF LOVE. 

And the timing couldn’t be more perfect! So often we confuse self love with “just go get a massage, or take a bath”... nuh uh... it runs so much deeper than that and it’s a lifelong journey if you dare!

COMMITMENT TO CHANGE Some of you might know that a COMMITMENT TO CHANGE
Some of you might know that at the end of last year I jumped into a big commitment… to compete onstage at a body building competition by the end of 2021! It was always a long term desire of mine to do something like that, but never a burning goal, so it took my 49th year to take the leap. 

So here I am, all signed up with a body building coach at the top of her game, working out every day in my garage, and two months in I’m pretty happy with the results! Muscles forming, body shape changing, strength building, and old mindset notions that ‘skinny is good’ completely challenged!

I also understand that for me to make it up on that stage and fit right in, I need to walk and talk it for the full 10 months leading up to the event. My diet, my sleep, my training, my attitude, it all has to be addressed daily to keep in me in check. This is commitment. And when it comes to health, fitness and personal development, I have that in bucket loads!

We all usually excel in one area of life, and it’s super easy to commit to what you need to do. But what if you aren’t excelling in an area that you should be? Then you apply the same rigour and dedication that you have in your successful areas of life and apply to your weaker area. You don’t run and hide. You get a coach or a mentor, you get onto the program, you do the daily practises, you check in with what your goal is daily, and you watch the subtle changes become greater and greater and you eventually reap the rewards.

But it requires that initial commitment.

I do this in my business life for business owners and entrepreneurs that want to work on their personal branding and marketing. So often we have to start with connecting back to self and tapping into what their true why and passion for their business is, and then work forward from there to self belief and the big picture marketing stuff.
DISTRACTIONS What are you doing right now for your DISTRACTIONS

Are you clear on your path? Do you have a vision and a solid action plan to help you get there?
Or… are you distracting yourself…
It’s very easy to do it, believe me, I have been doing it for decades! And it’s really hard to spot because you often look so busy and useful that you have everybody fooled that what you are doing is important, (including yourself)!
But… you may just be distracting yourself from the big picture in life, your relationships, your health and your business. You are probably one of the busiest people you know (I know I am!), and that is a sure sign of falling prey to the attractiveness of ‘busy-ness’ vs clear cut actions that take you to where you truly want to be.

And as business owners, we are the MASTERS of distraction!
This can look like:
• Over-managing your team or conversely not having enough team so you are run ragged keeping up.
• Not paying enough attention to your finances and running your cashflow too tight. There is nothing more distracting than running out of funds for your business!
• Putting out spot fires all day rather than working on the really important business strategy stuff that will really make an impact in your world.
• Handing over your marketing strategy to a young junior in the office rather than work on it yourself – and then wonder why you aren’t getting more business!
• Doing the menial tasks that a junior should be doing!
• Pointless meetings that go too long (but make you feel significant in the moment).
• Procrastinating on big decisions that need your attention.
• Indulging too much in things that aren’t good for you. The wrong foods, alcohol, coffee, sugar, Netflix, unfulfilling friendships/relationships, non-inspiring conversations, buying more ‘stuff’, gambling, decorating your house… but does any of this actually FEED YOU?! They’re all distractions keeping you away from your focused attention on what you actually could achieve in your life – that might really make a difference to people.

And guess who is on the panel of speakers!! (...me!)
I think most people that know me would agree that I'm a massive fan of personal development and being positive, no matter what life throws at you. Inspiration is one of my highest values so when I was asked by my good friend to be on the panel for his upcoming event, 'Love and Learn', I was pretty chuffed!

Now I'm no relationship or dating expert... far from it! But I have done a lot of self awareness work and personal development in my quest for self-love and inner peace, and being thrust back into the singles scene in my 49th year of life and facing my own challenges with co-dependence, being widowed unexpectedly, relationships gone wrong and coming out glowing on the other side... I'm really happy to share in whatever way I can.

So if you're single, about to be single, dating but wanting more from your relationship, or just looking to heal very old pain in yourself before you embark on a new relationship (which I highly recommend!!) then this event is for you. It's not a dodgy singles meetup. It's an open discussion forum for men and women who want to learn from industry professionals about how to navigate the dating scene, understand love languages, attachment styles and work on themselves to enjoy life either single or in a relationship with a much happier and healthier mindset.

Rolling out some of the awesome images from my rec Rolling out some of the awesome images from my recent photoshoot with the amazing @melinda_hird_photography and @visionsinstyle. As a business owner or a personal brand manager, you need to continually be creating content and projecting an image that reflects the soul of what you do and who you are.

You can go in half-arsed and hope that your reputation and services/products speak loud enough for you....
Or you can get over your nerves and misplaced concern around what people think of you/say about you and just BE YOUR FRIKKIN AWESOME SELF! One of my young adults son's constantly says to me "you do you mum". This is the ultimate compliment in my books. So many people are content with being 'vanilla', because they either don't know who they, aren't passionate about living their best life, or are too shy or reserved to truly inspire the audience that they serve.

How great could life be if you jumped in boots and all with complete abandonment of "what will people think?!", and showed up every day with complete authenticity, joy and confidence to be uniquely you.

It would be so awesome from where I'm standing to see you like that. Because what I mainly see in business are people playing it safe and all following each other. 

What a missed opportunity to not share more of who you truly are and all of your unique gifts.

Many thanks to our lovely client and friend, Nathan from NGR Accounting Pty Ltd last Friday for the invite to see our wonderful premier Gladys Berejiklian speak at one of the first local business lunches in easily 12 months!
The woman is a true star... but I have the say the real star of the show was the pull-up banner we designed for Nathan, among a wide host of many things with the provocative question: "Does Your Accountant Give a S#!T About You?"

I was pretty excited to see it front and centre on the stage with many people talking about it and getting loads of positive attention as a real conversation starter and pattern interrupt in a sea of familiar and boring marketing messaging.

You want to stand out these days? You don't have to be shocking. But you do need to be unexpected. There is a deluge of marketing messages around us that we are becoming quite indifferent to subtle and safe messaging. Bold, clever, original, humorous and the element of truth-telling are the ingredients I recommend!

How would your pull-up banner, website, brochure or social media posts stack up in a sea of competitors. Same/same? Or different and unique? Would your target audience even notice it?

Be like Gladys, go against the flow. Know who you are and stick to that. Be different. Because it works.

Hey lovers, hope you had a wonderful day yesterday Hey lovers, hope you had a wonderful day yesterday regardless of if you're in a committed or casual relationship, married, or happily single! The most important relationship we'll ever have is with ourselves. And these past few months I've been really learning what this means. 

To spend time by yourself over the holidays and just be content with your own company.
To learn who you really are, what lights you up and take up interests that are yours, not somebody elses.
To put yourself first.
To not have to explain yourself to anybody.
To not look to others to brighten your world.
To pick up the projects that you shelved when you were putting so much time into your relationship.
To not need the admiration of others to feel good about yourself.
To question conventional relationships and find something that suits you, not matches a very tired old traditional social system.
To help others when they need it and expect nothing in return.
To make new friends.
To deepen friendships and support each other when you might have only ever relied on a partner to fill that void in the past.
To be independent and content in every aspect of your life.
To create things and be intensely proud of your efforts.
To remember to practice gratitude and be happy for what you have.
To stop judging yourself and others.
To not wait for a 'white knight' to save you.
To live life with joy and not place expectations on the outcome.
To not be caught up in the idea of "how things should be".
To be happy because you like yourself.
To learn who the f#$% you actually are!

Being in a healthy, loving, giving relationship is so wonderful... but embracing some solo time and learning how to love yourself can also be the greatest gift.

PART 4: HOW TO ENSURE YOU HAVE A GREAT PERSONAL BR PART 4: HOW TO ENSURE YOU HAVE A GREAT PERSONAL BRAND PHOTOGRAPHIC SHOOT

The big day! Photoshoot day! 
So it’s tempting to just freak out and stumble through the day as quickly as possible.
OR. You can get a great night sleep, do a big stretch and/or workout in the morning so you feel amazing, eat a small but sufficient breakfast, and visualise the crap out of how awesome you are and speak super-kindly to yourself all day, so you give your very best in front of that camera – because believe me, the camera DOES NOT LIE!!!

I had my shoot last Friday and I can honestly say I loved it! I was fully prepared, knew what I wanted to achieve, had done all the visualisation and now it was time to have fun, let the pros do their work and get the great results.

If you’re stressed, nervous, tired or unconfident, it’s magnified.
So, better to be relaxed, confident and self-assured. And you can only look like this if you prepare yourself to be in a great mental space, and ENJOY YOURSELF! 

Here are some photoshoot day tips to help you:
1) Make sure you have given your hair and makeup oodles of time to be done so nobody is rushing. (And you’ve briefed your stylist prior to the shoot so they turn up ready to roll.)
2) Pack your car up with all your clothes/props/shoes BEFORE you get your hair and makeup done.
3) Plan the food for the shoot and/or drinks prior as well. You don’t need to be buying anything on the way!
4) Get to your location and play your favourite music along the way so you’re really in a good mental space. (That might also mean turning off your phone!!)
5) When you get on location, unpack everything and hang it on a rack in the sections for each shoot so you are really organised.
6) Change into your first outfit and relax into it. It’s just a camera, nothing to be intimidated about at all! If your photographer is a true pro they will have you really relaxed and feeling great about yourself. If you have a designer/art director with you they will also help to ease you in so you are feeling at your best.
7) If your budget can afford a stylist, I highly recommend it. For your clothing/look, your settings and also your posing. It makes all the difference

Helena's first day at her first job out of uni in a digital marketing agency, Lottie started her first job out of high school last week in an Office Administration traineeship and Dane celebrating a month in his real estate trainee job.

BIG changes in all of our lives, so fun to be able to experience complete FREEDOM!! Me included ha ha! These beautiful creatures are my very favourite people in the whole wide world. xx

Family time, beautiful bush and coast walks, decad Family time, beautiful bush and coast walks, decades of history and truckloads of support and love for all of the challenging times that life throws at you. Today we did something a bit different. We each took a shell, set an intention that we want to action for this year and then made a promise to ourselves that we would actually commit to it. And then hurled the shell into the waves below the cliff. It was really quite a great moment and much more powerful than just saying you'd do something and then forget about it.
Wish I could say I came up with the idea but I didn't! - I wanted to share it though because if you believe in the power of making positive choices and creating the life that you want... then you might try it too!

I pulled this card for me very late last night whe I pulled this card for me very late last night when I needed a timely reminder. It did make me tear up (which is pretty hard to do!), but the honesty of the words that we are all beautiful, and we are all so delicate when we allow ourselves to be beautifully vulnerable to connect deeper, just really resonated.
Love, kindness, inner beauty, laughter, empathy... there really isn’t much more you need to be a quality human and lead a happy life.

PART 3: HOW TO ENSURE YOU HAVE A GREAT PERSONAL BR PART 3: HOW TO ENSURE YOU HAVE A GREAT PERSONAL BRAND PHOTOGRAPHIC SHOOT

This section is all about how to LOOK YOUR BEST! 
So this is where most business owners really panic about getting their photos done and do all sorts of stalling tacts in the hope they will:
a) Lose weight 🏋️‍♂️
b) Get in shape 🍍
c) Spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on new clothes thinking it matters 👠

But these are all self-sabotaging acts. Just get your photos done! And if you do change your look substantially in the coming months or years, then just get them reshot. You should be updating your photos every 18 months or so anyway because your audience is ready for something new by then!

So here is a list of what I’ve been up to for the past week before my shoot this Friday:

😍  I got my hair cut and coloured a couple of weeks ago so it’s nice and fresh for the shoot, but has that lived in look. Nothing crazy, it’s important you look like you.

💋  I visited my beauty salon today for a lovely face freshen up and had a pedicure because I love my feet and will be barefoot in some photos. I don’t care too much about fingernails, I like to look like I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty… but I do love painted toenails! Whatever your normal go-to is, do that.

😎. Fake tan… I wear it all the time. I don’t glow orange, but I don’t shine my normal shade of white either! Again, just be consistent with what you normally do so you look the same when people actually meet you in the flesh. Be super careful of it on your face – it can do strange things on camera.

💪. Work out. I do that anyway, but I have maintained the rage leading up to the shoot with special focus on my arms as that is what will be on show!

🥑. Watch what you eat, your skin really does reflect what you consume. I told my trainer that I have a shoot coming up and she put me on a different diet for the next week that will help shred me a bit and then I can resume my weight training diet afterwards (which is usually very high in carbs as I’m trying to build muscle). Don’t do any weird fasting diets before your shoot. You won’t look or feel good.

And unless you’re very confident, book in a hair and makeup artist.

PART 2: HOW TO ENSURE YOU HAVE A GREAT PERSONAL BR PART 2: HOW TO ENSURE YOU HAVE A GREAT PERSONAL BRAND PHOTOGRAPHIC SHOOT
I’ve spent a good chunk of this weekend getting really clear about my upcoming photographic shoot. It’s the difference between a good shoot and a sensational one! Unless you want to look like everybody else (no thanks), you really do need to put in the leg work and help your photographer and designer give you the best results possible.

❤️ Get very, very clear on what the AIM OF YOUR SHOOT is. For me, I need images for my business website, my personal website and my music website. I also need images that will support my online programs, podcast, press releases and speaker information. Plus to support general content that I have planned. So list it all out and understand exactly what you need and give that list to your photographer.

❤️ YOUR SOCIAL MEDA IMAGES NEED TO BE A PATTERN INTERRUPT. That is why the good old selfie is such a reliable shot! You need to help people to stop scrolling past your posts, and one of the best ways is through a great image of what most of your followers find engaging, and that is YOU! Yes it feels very ego-centric. But, that’s marketing these days so get over yourself and just handle it! Other ways to create a great pattern interrupt are unusual angles, really high level photography, dramatic lighting, unexpected poses/props, unusual colours and anything that is OUT OF THE ORDINARY. 🤩

❤️ You need to know who your TARGET AUDIENCE is. 🎯  And what your brand message is to them. Your images need to ooze that message. There is an epidemic among business owners to all just play safe and mimic each other (subliminally we all just want to fit in)… but please don’t! We are all individuals so use that difference and stand out.

❤️ Who do you need to BE? I’m a big fan of visualising the shoot before you turn up for it. For my shoot I’ve got a theme of being a ROCKSTAR BUSINESS OWNER! 🎤  It supports my interests as being a singer/songwriter, and the names of my programs and online course are all around being a Rockstar. So on the day I’ll have to really pump myself up to pull it off. Your photoshoot is such an opportunity to show your true personality.
My life has been so consumed with work, coast walk My life has been so consumed with work, coast walks, climbing mountains, lifting weights and work outs the past few months. So tonight I frocked up, had cocktails and enjoyed the most gorgeous company with Anna Porter.
I believe it’s called balance! It was so good I think I’ll do it again.

I'm not gonna lie, this 'reccie' with co-collaborator @melinda_hird_photography was heaps of fun and we may have gotten a little over-excited during the briefing of creating a 🤘 rockstar personal brand for my agency and online courses! We are shooting next week so I thought I'd share with you my tips for a successful shoot as we lead up to it...

✔️ Find an amazing location. 😍  One that really resonates with you and your brand. I have wanted to shoot with @visionsinstyle for 18 months now and these sneak peek photos of just some of the space shows you why!

✔️ Do a reccie trip to the location with your photographer before the shoot. Understand the location, the lighting, vehicle access, what props you need to bring. You don't want any 'surprises' on the day. 🤔

✔️ Give your photographer a very detailed brief. 🎬  They need to know what you want to achieve, who your target audience is, what your brand message is, where the photos are going to be used and the look you are going for. This will help them to get their creative juices flowing and if they're any good, they'll also make lots of suggestions to you that will only enhance your vision. Just make sure they truly understand you and don't hijack the original brief!! 🏆

✔️ If you need to, have your designer there as well if they are helping you create this vision. Too often I see business owners go off and get their own photos done and come back with images that don't fit the vision of the new website/new promotion, and it's just a missed opportunity if it doesn't hit the mark. 🎯

✔️ Start preparing yourself physically for the shoot. (I'll do another post on this in the coming days). 🏃‍♀️ You cannot be too prepared!!! Most people are pretty intimidated in front of a camera so it's best to put your best face forward, and that can take a little planning. 🙏 

✔️ Start a vision board going with your inspiration, and share that with your photographer.

✔️ Focus on YOU. Don't worry about what people are doing. Dare to stand out and BE BRAVE! Your audience wants it.
